Why the Best Portraits Aren’t Always Planned
Some of the most powerful portraits happen when nobody is trying too hard to create them.
We often imagine portrait photography as carefully planned: the perfect location, wardrobe, pose, lighting, and expression. Planning absolutely has its place, but sometimes the image that stays with us is the one that happens between the planned moments.
A genuine laugh.
A quiet pause.
A glance away from the camera.
The way someone naturally moves when they forget they are being photographed.
These moments reveal something that posing alone cannot.
Great portrait photography isn’t simply about telling someone how to stand. It’s about creating an environment where they feel comfortable enough to stop performing. When that happens, personality begins to replace posing, and emotion replaces perfection.
As a photographer, I can control the light, composition, camera settings, and environment. What I cannot—and should not—fully control is the person in front of my lens.
That’s where the magic happens.
Sometimes the best photograph comes from changing the plan. Maybe the original pose isn’t working. Maybe the subject moves unexpectedly. Maybe the light changes. Instead of fighting those moments, an experienced photographer learns to recognize them and respond.
The camera becomes less about directing and more about observing.
This is especially important with portraits that are meant to feel intimate, artistic, or personal. Authenticity often comes from allowing space for something unscripted to happen.
The goal isn’t always to create a perfect photograph.
The goal is to create a photograph that feels true.
Years from now, you may not remember exactly how you posed. But you’ll remember the feeling captured in the image—the confidence, vulnerability, joy, strength, or quietness that made the moment yours.
So plan the session.
Choose the location.
Prepare the wardrobe.
Shape the light.
But leave room for the unexpected.
Because sometimes the photograph you never planned becomes the photograph you treasure most.
